A computer error in a system that despatches healthcare subsidy checks in Massachusetts has left families short of money for the holiday system. The families are part of a program that subsidises low income earners a substantial cost of their healthcare premiums. The subsidy is paid in arrears - the families receive it as a reimbursement. But because the checks are late, the families have had to carry the full cost of their healthcare. Around 1,100 checks from November were delayed - so the impact has landed right in the lead up to Christmas.
State workers identified a computer system problem last week in two databases that were not communicating, so checks were not being released from the comptroller's office
